Friday Five rerun

Here's my original answers from waaay back in 2002

1. What is your current occupation? Is this what you chose to be doing at this point in your life? Why or why not?: Software engineer. And yes, this is what I thought I would be doing at this point in my life. That's what I got my degree for, right?

2. If time/talent/money were no object, what would your dream occupation be?: Taking pictures. Getting paid for my obsession/compulsion would be awesome!

3. What did/do your parents do for a living? Has this had any influence on your career choices?: Teacher and graphic designer. Nope...no influence. (unchanged)

4. Have you ever had to choose between having a career and having a family?: Not yet...and I hope I'll never have to choose between a family and a career but that's not very realistic. In an ideal world, I'd just have to put a career on hold and would be able to jump back into it at a later point =\ We'll see.

5. In your opinion, what is the easiest job in the world? What is the hardest? Why?: Easiest job in the world? Doing something you love. Hardest? Doing something you hate. Enough said. (unchanged)

ps. for those of you who miss the friday five, it's been resurrected in the form of an LJ community

I can't remember whether I already blogged about this or not so I'm just going to blog about it for what might possibly be the second time

At the end of 2005 I went on a Vegas trip. I flew back from Vegas to LAX early, early Sunday morning and took a shuttle back to the lot where I had left my car.

The shuttle was populated by me and one other person, a Caucasian lady who looked to be in her early thirties or so. She started to chat with me, I don't remember much of what she said (3 hours of shallow sleep will do that to you) and I think she was mildly irritated when I asked where she was from after she had already told me (she was from Los Angeles, btw).

What I do remember clearly was when she asked if I was Filipino.

I paused for a second after she asked me, digesting her question slowly in my sleep-deprived brain. My first instinct was to exclaim "Have you ever seen a Filipino/Filipina?" but I repressed the urge and instead told her "No, I'm Japanese."

"Oh." she said, smiling. "Your people have beautiful skin."

Wha...?

I'm used to hearing Korean (Japanese and Koreans do look kind of similar IMO), Chinese (because all Asians in the USA are Chinese, right?) and even Vietnamese (I guess I can understand that sort of what with the high population of Vietnamese in this area) but Filipina? With my paper-white skin and tiny, monolidded eyes I don't think I'd fit anyone's description of a typical Filipina. And it's not like the woman who asked me was some hermit who'd never seen Asians before...I mean she's from LA!

Perhaps she was running on even less sleep than I was.

I am Flickring in the company of a glass of a 2000 Bordeaux. I'm trying to decide whether it's drinkable. The cork smelled vaguely of soy sauce, so I'm leaning towards no...

MAC Carbon is king

I occasionally have a fleeting desire to work in the creative industry just so I could wear smoked-out hooker eyes every day.

Hope you all had a lovely Feb 14th. I know I did <3

gadammit it's been a while

and speaking of webpages and the internets i should really make a new layout. cause it's been, like, forever.

I just realized I'm no longer special!

So I was just thinking gaddammit I kind of miss the old days when websites were all about hawt graphics (or gRaPhiX as the hot graphicers were wont to call them) and tItE layouts and when most people I knew thought it was weird that I had a webpage and even weirder that I had a blog (because wtf would I want someone reading a journal and because wtf is a blog and wtf kind of f-ed up word is "blog" anyway) and all the asian webpagers wanted to be on Asianx.com (don't go there now I think it's a gay porn site) IIStix still existed and all Filipinos were "pinoys" and "pinays" (not that they aren't now it's just what they all happened to call themselves back then) who called their geocities websites "bahays" (seriously all the Tagalog I learned came from personal homepages circa the year 2000) and there were tons of webrings and "awards" for the aforementioned tItE WeBpaGeS and everyone and their mom's (including myself...but not my mom) had those graphics-heavy content-lite teensy little websites in non-resizeable pop-up windows.

Now everyone and their mom (including me...and my mom) has a xanga/facebook/livejournal/myspace and five blogs and a photobucket/flickr/picasa (speaking of moms and flickr...my mom found my flickr) which kind of makes me just very unspecial and trendy-in-a-bad-way. Not that I was ever special and trendy-in-a-good-way.

Oh well. At least internet stalking is a whole lot easier now!

I just realized that now that the hungry coworker is the hungry ex coworker I'm now the youngest one in the office again!

(sorry hungry ex-coworker I guess I'm not gonna miss you after all)

oh and ps. hungry ex-coworker today we cleaned out your cube and I found a post-it that said "Calzone" on it.

Songs for now

Songs that I've been listening to (or have been really really wanting to listen to) a lot for the past few days:
Carnival The Cardigans This song makes me happy :D Err...I don't think it's a happy song though...?

Lake Michigan Rogue Wave I just wiki'd Rogue Wave and discovered the song was used in a Zune commercial. For some reason, that makes me feel lame.

...and along the same lines....

My Moon My Man Feist ...which was used in a Verizon commerical...which also makes me feel lame.

Please Don't Stop the Music Rihanna The beat makes me want to dance! I seriously don't care for anything that Rihanna does that is not danceable (e.g. Unfaithful which was a pretty big hit but I couldn't bear to listen to it...it was embarassing =\)

Everyday People Arrested Development This song is quite awesome.

Groove is in the Heart Deee-lite FUN. That is all. I really need to rip my Deee-lite album =\

Highschool Stalker Hello Saferide This song is about a stalker so you know it has to be cool. Especially since she sings about internet stalking in the first verse.

And that's all I can think of for now...

As of late...

The cough has kind of died down...but it comes back in nasty little spurts. Mostly at night.

Finished up a course of antibiotics yesterday. Doctor says that the stuff will prob stay in my system for about 10 days or so after my last dose so methinks I'm well on my way to recovering. At least I can sleep now. And I'm not gagging anymore ;P

Last Valentine's I spent the evening drinking red wine and making truffles by myself (which resulted in a big mess because drunkeness + cocoa powder don't mix too well) after working late. The year before I think I had cheap porkchops w/ ICS friends (romantic porkchop tuesdays???) and afterward spent the evening reading and drinking bubbly...by myself ;P This year I will be drinking red wine (probably) and eating steak with the VV.

I'm doing a Nishi girl Vegas trip in March which is quite exciting! I haven't been to Vegas since December 2005 and I haven't done a full Vegas weekend since October 2004 and I haven't taken a trip with those three girls (just us four together) like, ever.

Leanne and I went to a little big restaurant called Hamlet on Lake in Pasadena yesterday afternoon. I got brunch (eggs florentine and a mimosa) and she got a sandwich and we were both very happy with our food choices and want to go back to try more. Next time I'm getting a bellini.

I have a sort of crazy desire to go back to Napa and Santa Barbara for wine tasting!

still ill

Been walking through life in an unpleasant sickness/medicine/lack of sleep-induced mental haze. My head hasn't been working too well for the past week or so ;P

Today I saw someone in the grocery store and thought "Hey he seems like a really nice guy!" which hasn't really happened before. First I saw him let a woman with fewer groceries than him move in front of him in line, and then when I got in line behind him he pushed all of his groceries up on the conveyor belt as far as he could to make room for my stuff. His haul included lots of fresh fruit, low-fat yogurt, and a Valentine's card for his mom.

Man I'm nosy.

Anyway, it's all just speculation.

Did I mention I've been feeling hazy lately?
